Q4 2021 Press Release – Gang Violence

MEDIA RELEASE: JANUARY 2022

As a result of recent acts of gang violence, one-quarter of residents feel they are now less likely to visit a restaurant or bar

BERMUDA: With recent acts of gang violence having occurred on the Island, with the most recent being the shooting at a local bar and restaurant, the community’s confidence in public safety has declined.

As part of our recent Bermuda Omnibus Survey, residents were asked to rate their likelihood of visiting a restaurant or bar in the coming weeks despite the recent events. Overall, six in ten indicated they would be just as likely to visit a bar or restaurant in the coming weeks, though one-quarter indicated they are now less likely.

Findings suggest there are demographic differences in the results, particularly when looking across parishes. Residents of Pembroke/Devonshire were more likely to express being just as likely while those in Hamilton/Smith’s/St. George’s are much more cautious about going out, with a greater proportion of residents in those areas indicating they are now less likely. There are also notable differences across age and genders, as there is a greater proportion of men and residents aged 35 and older who express being less likely to dine out in the upcoming weeks.

These results are part of Narrative Research Bermuda’s Online Bermuda Omnibus® Survey conducted between November 26 – December 12, 2021 with a sample of adult residents of Bermuda (18 years of age or older). The results above are not commissioned by a third party and were collected independently by Narrative Research Bermuda. The results presented in this document were collected from our online survey of 370 members of Narrative Research Bermuda’s proprietary online panel of adult residents, Bermuda Voice. A margin of error cannot be ascribed to the online survey results.
