MEDIA RELEASE: August 2024
A sizeable majority of Bermuda residents say they would vote in an election if one were called today.
BERMUDA: With lots of election buzz in Bermuda recently, we wanted to better understand voting intentions and habits of residents. We asked residents if an election were called in Bermuda today, if would they vote or note. Overall, seven in ten residents (72%) would vote, while two in ten would not vote (20%) and about one in ten are not eligible to vote (8%).
Among residents, those who are 55+ years old and Bermudians are more likely than their respective counterparts to report they would vote in an election, if one were called today. Across parishes, those in Warwick/Paget are least likely to report they would vote in an election called today.
Furthermore, we asked whether residents typically vote for the political party or if they base their vote on the individual candidate who is running. Overall, one-half of Bermuda residents report they vote for the candidate (50%), while four in ten indicate they cast their vote for the political party (43%). It should be noted that seven percent of residents either have never voted or are not registered to vote, and one in ten are unsure.
Across demographics, women more commonly indicate they vote for the candidate. On the other hand, men are more likely to vote for the political party.
These results reflect opinions of 400 adult Bermuda residents (18 years or age or older), conducted from May 30th and June 12th, 2024. The questions are not commissioned by a third party and were collected independently by Narrative Research Bermuda. A sample size of 400 is a well-recognised market research industry standard and provides a representative sampling of Islanders. The survey was conduced by telephone. A sample size of 400 surveys collected by telephone allows for a statistical margin of error to within ± 4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
